DIRECTOR
Lawrence Lesher
ABOUT THE SHOW
Alas, poor young actor… Andrew Rally dreams of TV stardom. But when he moves back to New York from L.A., he is cast as Hamlet – and he hates Hamlet. He also discovers that he’s living in the former apartment of legendary stage actor John Barrymore. Andrew finds to his dismay that he is now haunted by the ghost of one of the most famous Hamlets of all time, who is adamant that Andrew should renounce his dreams of television and embrace Shakespeare. In short, Barrymore insists that all the world’s a stage and Andrew should be on it – no matter what he wants. To be or not to be? ‘Tis a witty farce! Director’s suggested reference for further reading on the show and roles:
https://www.encyclopedia.com/arts/educational-magazines/i-hate-hamlet
ROLES AVAILABLE
•Andrew Rally: Male, 20s-30s. An actor. Handsome and charming, with polished ease and apparent star quality. Glides through life on a cloud of good looks and affability. Not without ego, he is more than accustomed to being the center of attention.
•John Barrymore: Male, 40+. The legendary actor, whose ghost is summoned in a séance. A witty and rakish fellow, larger than life, with a wicked, bounding glee. Dashing and romantic, grandiose and theatrical. A hard-drinking womanizer who has lost none of his lust for earthly pleasures.
•Deidre McDavey: Female, 20s-30s. Andrew’s girlfriend. A wild romantic, full of delicious comic fervor. Always on the verge of a swoon, which she whole-heartedly enjoys, but delightfully resilient. Irresistibly appealing, she is a beacon of breathless wonder. Seems much younger than she is.
•Gary Lefkowitz: Male, 25+. Writer-producer-director friend of Andrew’s from L.A. Both appalling and irresistible. Shamelessly exuberant, loves his life. Comes across as a happy, overgrown child. Oddly appealing. Cares little for reality or art, only for money.
•Felicia Dantine: Female, 25+. Andrew’s real estate agent. Breezy and enthusiastic, strong and imposing, has a jubilant air and just a little weirdness about her. Has an obvious passion for her job. Also a psychic medium, she summons the spirit of Barrymore.
•Lillian Troy: Female, able to play 65-85. German accent a plus. Andrew’s agent. No-nonsense, wry and tough, but with a surprising romantic streak and a hidden softer side. Regal and striking, yet secretly delighted with any sort of hijinks. Had a fling with Barrymore years ago.
DIVERSITY IN CASTING
Ocala Civic Theatre is committed to casting diverse artists who reflect the demographics of our city and our society. As a community theatre with an open casting policy, we promote equal opportunity and inclusion. We actively invite those performing artists who may have been historically underrepresented. AUDITIONS
Actors will read from the script. Copies of the script are available at the Theatre and may be checked out from the box office for one week with a $10 refundable deposit. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Please call (352) 236-2274 before coming to make sure a script is in stock. If you check out a script the week before auditions, you must return it by 5:30 p.m. on Friday, November 6. It is only necessary to attend one night of auditions. No experience is necessary. Newcomers and theatre veterans alike are welcome and encouraged to audition. If you are unable to attend the scheduled auditions, please contact the Theatre at (352) 236-2274 about making a separate appointment. Be prepared at auditions to list any conflicts with the rehearsal schedule.
REHEARSALS
Rehearsals will be held November 30 – January 13, Monday through Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Ocala Civic Theatre. There will be time off for the holidays. There also will be an all-day tech rehearsal on Saturday, January 9. PERFORMANCES
There will be 20 public performances, Thursdays through Sundays, from January 14 – February 7, 2021.
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS

It’s the timeless tale beloved for generations: In 1840s London, Ebenezer Scrooge (Alex Pinkston) is a lonely old miser who cares only for money and nothing for his fellow man. But one Christmas Eve, when four ghosts visit him in the night, Scrooge sees the light and awakens to a second chance. In this faithful yet imaginative adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, five actors (Lizzy Allen, Alex Dagg, Ashlyn Gibbs, Robert Skipper, and James R. Taylor III) bring to life all the other immortal characters: Marley’s ghost, the spirits of Christmas, Fezziwig and his wife, Tiny Tim and the Cratchits, and a dozen more. Richly costumed, with a wonderfully creative set and special effects, this stage version captures the world of Victorian England with all its charms and sorrows. A fiddler (James Huston) further evokes the mood of the era with traditional carols and English folk tunes. This powerful tale of redemption is as relevant as ever with its themes of love, generosity, and hope for humanity. A delight for young and old alike, A CHRISTMAS CAROL creates the perfect occasion to bring the whole family and introduce a new generation to this heart-warming holiday tradition. ‘Tis the season for this merry message of peace and goodwill to all! A CHRISTMAS CAROL is co-directed by Trudy Bruner and Katrina Ploof. Musical director is Philip King. Scenic designer is Mihai Ciupe. Costume designer is Eryn Brooks Brewer. Lighting designer is David Castaneda. Sound designer is Jim Foster. Props designer is Laura Bradford. Dialect coach is Lori Engler. Stage manager is Kiersten Farley. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for ages 18 and younger. You can buy tickets over the phone at (352) 236-2274 or in person at the box office Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information or to buy tickets online any time, visit www.ocalacivictheatre.com.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL is live on stage November 19 through December 20 at Ocala Civic Theatre.
